Changing the Guard
One of Britain's most colourful ceremonies. The New Guard marches from Victoria Barracks through Windsor town centre and into the castle, usually at 11:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, accompanied by a regimental band.
Arrive by 10:30 for a good vantage point on Castle Hill. The ceremony is weather-dependent and can be cancelled at short notice.
Getting Here
By train
Direct services run from London Paddington to Windsor & Eton Central (change at Slough, around 30–50 minutes) and from London Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside (around 55 minutes). Both stations are a short walk from the castle.
By car
Windsor is about 25 miles west of central London via the M4 (junction 6). There is no visitor parking at the castle itself — use the town centre car parks, all within a 10-minute walk.
Good to Know
Before you go
Windsor is a working royal palace, so opening arrangements can change at short notice for state occasions. Always check the official Royal Collection Trust site before travelling.
Access
The castle is built on a steep hill. Step-free routes, wheelchairs and a mobility vehicle are available; the State Apartments are accessible by lift. St George's Chapel has level access.
Photography
Photography is welcome in the castle precincts and grounds, but not inside the State Apartments or St George's Chapel.
Families
Free family multimedia guides and activity trails are available. Pushchairs are permitted in the precincts but must be left at the entrance to the State Apartments.
